NAZARETH, PA -- Nazareth Speedway, with its "five" turns, has always been a challenge for all forms NASCAR racing. This flat rack proved to be no exception on Sunday with some of the most exciting racing of the year!
The Bayer/Alka Seltzer car started the race mid-pack (24th position) with the Green
brothers, Jeff and David, breaking track records on the pole. The first five laps brought out two cautions, which tightened up the field. very early on.Tony was starting to move up fast, and then was 'black flagged' for passing on the left. This was a temporary set back, and put Tony back out on the track in the 40th slot, putting him a lap down. Within another 30 laps, Tony got his lap back. The race was filled with cautions very early, mixing up the field, until a long stretch of no cautions and the cars all desperately needed a caution for tires, gas and adjustments. Cars that hadn't actually been in wrecks needed to tighten up their chassis to correct major handling problems. By lap 99, some of the leaders and others pitted the cars, but Tony stayed out; only 14 cars were on the lead lap all waiting for a caution, By lap 113, Tony got his much needed caution. After an awesome pit stop, Tony produced some of his best showmanship of the season: a 360-degree spin. His evasive action kept him from a multi-car pile-up, and he continued to hover between 8th - 10th place. On lap 157, Tony made his move to pass Hermie Sadler to take the seventh position. He scrapped the wall in the dangerous turn two area where most of the action had taken place in the event. Although he had some sheet metal damage, a quick pit stop got him back out. Again, on lap 178, Tony was rear ended in a pack of traffic, but with non-threatening damage he kept going to ultimately finish 12th. "We had a top 5 car. I got a little rambunctious, which cost me a black flag. We raced our way back to the lead lap, and then twice lap cars spun me out. I was then in 7th, gaining on 5th and 6th place, but I was trying too hard and hit the wall all by myself," Tony said after the race. "We're looking forward to Pikes Peak next weekend. It's a tough track." Tony finished 2nd there in 1998 in NASCAR Craftsman truck series. Race winner was Ron Hornaday, his first Busch career win. Ron struggled all day to keep ahead of series point's leader Jeff Green. Tony is now 9th in the NASCAR Busch series point standings. He has 2044 points, just 1 point behind 8th place, Casey Atwood. Next week it's off to the popular Pikes Peak Colorado event, Saturday July 22. The NAPA Auto Parts 250 will broadcast on ESPN2. |
