Joliet, IL - Saturday's Hills Brother Coffee 300 marked the inaugural Busch Grand National race at Chicagoland Speedway, and for Tony Raines and the No. 33 Bayer Consumer Care Racing team, it turned out to be quite a good day. Raines and the No. 33 Bayer Consumer Care Racing team delivered another solid performance from start to finish as they finished 11th, capturing their 12th top-15 finish of the season.
Raines was very fast during Thursday's practice session, posting the second overall fastest speed of the day. In Friday's practice session, the No. 33 machine was seventh quickest, and qualified 18th with a speed of 178.376 mph. "We had excellent practice sessions," crew chief Michael Kadlecik said after qualifying. "We went out (for qualifying) with new tires. We should have scuffed them a little more during practice so they would take to the track better during qualifying. They didn't get a good grab to the track in qualifying."
Due to several cautions in the early stages of the race, Raines was only able to gain a couple of track positions. Lap 32 brought out another caution and allowed Raines to come in to pit. Raines had reported that the car was a little loose. The Bayer Consumer Care Racing crew was able to make adjustments, put four new tires on the Aleve car, and refuel. After a flawless 16.2-second pit stop, Raines gained six positions and rejoined the field in the tenth spot.
Raines had worked his way up to the seventh place when the yellow was thrown again on lap 97. Raines came in for his routine pit stop. While coming down a busy and crowded pit row, Raines overshot his pit stall by just a few inches and had to back the car up. Overshooting a pit stall is a common occurrence during a race, but resulted in valuable seconds being lost during the pit stop. Raines lost six track positions and was in thirteenth spot.
Raines managed to gain a few more track positions and avoid several more accidents to finish in the 11th spot and moving him back in the fifth spot in the NASCAR point standings.
"We hurt ourselves this race," crew chief Michael Kadlecik said. "All of the positions we gained on the first pit stop, we lost on the second pit stop. Tony had radioed in that the car was running a little hot, and we realized that there was a paper towel over the grill on the front of the car. At that point, we were just pretty much in survival mode. I have a great bunch of guys working on this team, but we are bound to make mistakes. We are getting to the point that we can have a top five finish every race. This team is doing so well this year, and we have high expectations. An 11th place finish is still good, but unfortunately, due to our own mistakes this race, we should have had a better finish.
Tony Raines and the Bayer Consumer Care Racing team will be competing next Saturday night under the lights at the 1.25-mile Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, MO in the CarQuest Auto Parts 250.
