Concord, NC - Saturday's CarQuest Auto Parts 300 saw Tony Raines and the Bayer Consumer Care Racing team put forth great effort just to finish the 200-lap event at the 1.5-mile oval Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Raines clocked the 10th fastest time in Friday's first practice session. Qualifying was cancelled after twelve drivers made qualifying attempts when it started to rain. The lineup for Saturday's race was determined by current point standings. "I wish we could qualify," crew chief Michael Kadlecik said after qualifying was cancelled. "I like the fact that we are seventh in points and that's where we will be starting, but I also know that if we could make our qualifying laps we would be starting ahead of the 7th place qualifier." Kadlecik continued, "Don't get me wrong, I am still pleased that we are starting in the top ten."

The race got off to a great start for Tony as he stayed in the top ten for the first ninety laps, avoiding accidents and making his way toward the front with the lead cars. The fifth caution of the day came on lap 90. Tony was running in the ninth position and was called into pit. The front tire changer, Ryan McKinney, had problems with his air gun not wanting to work properly, which slowed the pit stop down. Fortunately, the problem resulted in the #33 Alka-Seltzer machine losing only one spot entering back into the race. Tony returned to the race in the tenth spot.

It was only a few laps later, after the restart, Tony started losing positions due to transmission problems. He radioed into the crew that third gear was completely gone, which explained why he fell behind on the restart.

"There's not a lot we can do right now," crew chief Michael Kadlecik said. "We just have to hope that there are not a lot more cautions. He's really slow on the restart and that's what's going to cause us to fall behind. We're still very fast when we get up to full speed. It's just taking us longer to get there than everyone else."

By lap 164, Tony was running in the 14th position. The caution came out for the 7th time of the day, just a few laps later. Tony pitted taking four new tires and gas. The crew made an air pressure adjustment to the right rear tire.

The yellow came again on lap 148 for the 8th time for debris. When the race was restarted, Tony found that this time he had lost second gear. This caused him to be very slow on the restart and allowed several cars to get around him.

Tony was able to finish 24th in the race despite the transmission problems. He has fallen back to the eighth place in the point's standings, but is only 48 points out of sixth.

Points leader, Jeff Green, took the checkered flag.

"I was trying to survive with only one gear," Tony commented after the race. "Charlotte (the track) is our biggest enemy. We never seem to have good luck in Charlotte. We don't test well here and we don't really ever race well here either. I guess that we will just keep after it. Someday it'll start to like us," Raines continued. "This weekend set us back, but not much. We have been on a great roll this season and I knew we were going to have one of those off weekends. Hopefully this was that weekend. It didn't hurt us that bad."

Tony Raines and the Bayer Consumer Care Racing crew will head to Dover Downs, also referred to as the 'Monster Mile', in Dover, Delaware next Saturday.
