Richmond, VA - Bayer Consumer Care driver Tony Raines earned his best finish so far this season by finishing second at the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway in the Hardee's 250.
Raines, who qualified 14th for the 250-lap event, surprised even himself on what a great run he had. "I knew we had a good car, I just didn't know how good," Raines said after the race.
Throughout the more than 2-hour Friday night race, Raines remained steady in the top ten with only a few instances that kept him out of the top group. During the first pit stop, which came on lap 81 under caution, the front tire changer, Ryan McKinney, experienced a jammed lug nut while changing the right side tire. This left Tony and the #33 Aleve machine in the 14th spot when they rejoined the leaders.
Very methodically, Raines worked his way back toward the front. While running in the 6th position, Tony came into pit under caution on lap 158. This time the Bayer Consumer Care Racing team had no complications during the pit stop, putting on four new tires, and placed Tony back in the field in the fifth spot. "We should be in the third position right now," crew chief Michael Kadlecik said after the pit stop. "One car stayed out on the track, and another competitor took right side tires only."
That didn't stop Tony from getting around the cars that were ahead of him. By lap 192, Tony was running second, right behind race leader, Jimmy Spencer. As the race winded down, Tony was pushing the car as much as he could to get ahead of Spencer, but Tony was not able to make the pass. He finished the race in the second position.
The top five finishers, with the exception of Tony Raines, are regulars in the Winston Cup series. Mike Skinner finished third, Matt Kenseth was fourth, and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five, respectively.
"We had a great day all the way around," Raines commented after the race. "We had a good solid run, and the pit stops were awesome. It was great, I didn't hit anything; and the car is still in one piece. This team is working so well together and we are so close to that first win," Raines continued. "I know the win is right around the corner. Hopefully it will be next week in Loudon."
Tony has gained one position in the point standings, moving from the ninth place spot to be in eighth place. Only 121 points separate him from the fifth place point position.
Tony Raines and the Bayer Consumer Care Racing team will be in Loudon, New Hampshire next weekend to compete in the CVS Pharmacy 200 Presented by Bayer. The race can be seen on FX at 1:00pm. |
