| Bristol, TN - Tony Raines and the
Bayer Consumer Care Racing team competed on the high-banks of the
.533-mile oval Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday in the Cheez-It 250.
The race weekend started off promising when Raines had the 7th
fastest time in Friday mornings first practice session. The #33 machine,
which displayed the Aleve brand colors, was the first car to make a
qualifying attempt. After all of the entries made their qualifying runs,
the field was set and Tony was in the 24th starting position.
The 250-lap event started around 1:00p.m. on Saturday. When the green
flag flew, Raines settled in behind the leaders. He quickly started
moving up positions and was 17th when on lap 67 the caution flag flew.
This would be the 6th caution of the day, which averaged one caution
every ten laps. Tony brought the car down pit road for the regular
routine pit stop, four new tires and fuel. The Bayer Consumer Care
Racing team had an abnormally slow pit stop due to the jack leaking
down. This left Tony rejoining the field in the 27th spot. Only a few
laps later after the race resumed under green, Tony avoided the biggest
wreck of the day. The incident collected at least 8 cars that were
running ahead of him. This would move Tony up to the 19th spot.
Tony was still very fast and moving towards the front, passing
several cars that were in front of him. He was called into pit again on
lap 163, while running in the 10th spot, under the ninth caution of the
day. This time the Bayer Consumer Care Racing crew had no problem during
their stop and a 16.4-second pit stop put Tony back in the race in the
8th place.
Tony would avoid a rash of cautions, 12 total, to bring the Aleve car
home in the 8th place and on the lead lap at the end of the race. Matt
Kenseth took the checkers.
"The beginning of the race started off awesome," crew chief
Michael Kadlecik said after the race. "When the weather changed we
started getting tight. Overall we had a great day. We brought the car
home in one piece, which is great considering this is Bristol. The team
is consistent," continued Michael. "Right now we are focusing
on top 10's then eventually top 5's and then a win. I'm not going to get
greedy or pushy. With the way we have the team and cars set up now, a
win is going to happen."
Tony Raines gained 50 points on the leader and is still working his
way up the ladder in the NASCAR point standings. He is currently 14th.
The Bayer Consumer Care Racing team will be at the Texas Motor
Speedway next weekend to compete in the Jani-King 300. The race will be
at 1:00p.m. and televised by FOX. |
