Darlington, SC-Tony
Raines and the Bayer Consumer Care Racing crew competed in Saturday's
SunCom200 at the Darlington Raceway, also known as the "Track too
tough to tame."
Raines qualified 26th at a
speed of 166.574mph, while Busch series rookie, Ryan Newman, captured
the pole.
As the race got underway,
Raines pushed towards the front of the field. He had worked his way up
to the 19th position when he radioed in to the crew that the car was a
little bit loose everywhere.
The caution flag that called
for the pit stops flew on lap 50 for debris in turns three and four.
Raines suggested adjustments to help the slight loose condition that he
was experiencing on the track. The crew put on four new tires and
refueled the car with Unical 76. Raines returned to the race to be in
the 17th spot.
By lap 104, Tony had worked
his way up to the 11th position. The last round of pit stops came on lap
123 when Gus Wasson hit the wall coming off of turn four. Tony came down
pit road with the leaders. While making his way into the pit stall, Tony
did not get the car completely in the pit box, and was penalized by
NASCAR. Tony had to make a stop in go after the restart that left him at
the tail end of the field and one lap down.
Tony gained a few positions,
but settled into 22nd place to finish the race.
"We had a great race
car all day," Raines said. "We had a top five car, but messed
up on the last pit stop. The guys did an excellent job in the
pits," Raines continued. "It wasn't a bad day, but it wasn't a
great day either."
Tony has gained a spot in
the NASCAR point standings and is currently 15th.
Series point leader, Jeff
Green, won the race holding off Matt Kenseth in the closing laps.
The NASCAR Busch Series
heads to Bristol next weekend for the sixth race of the 33-race
schedule. Watch for the Bayer Consumer Care Racing team, as they will
compete on Saturday, March 24th, at the fast ½ mile in the Cheez-It
250. |
