Las Vegas, NV - The
Bayer Consumer Care Racing team and driver Tony Raines had an
outstanding run at the 1 ½ mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday in
the Sam's Town 300.
In a city where risks are
high and chances are taken, the #33 Alka-Seltzer proved that "Lady
Luck" was on their side.
On Friday, Tony Raines'
practice times were very fast and the crew knew that they were going to
be a contender for the race. Although Raines qualifying time was not the
fastest, he was able to secure the 31st starting spot for Saturday's
event. Raines was quick to offer reasoning as to what happened during
his qualifying lap. "I messed up during my qualifying lap,"
Raines said. " I got a little loose going into turn one. The car is
very fast."
With Matt Kenseth on the
pole, the race was underway on Saturday. Raines was headed for the front
when Blaise Alexander spun in turn two bringing out the first caution of
the day on lap 3. With it still being in the early stages of the race,
crew chief, Michael Kadlecik, had Tony come down pit road just to top
off fuel. Raines returned to the race to be at the back of the field.
After the restart, Tony was
still very fast and moving his way towards the front. By lap 38, Raines
was in the 17th position. The 2nd caution of the day came on lap 40 for
debris on the track. Tony came into pit taking on four new tires and
refueling. After an incredible 16-second pit stop, Raines gained 7 spots
leaving him in 10th place for the restart of the race.
After another rash of
cautions, Tony was able to hold his 10th place. The yellow flag was
thrown again on lap 58 when the 2nd place car of Matt Kenseth and the
3rd place car of Greg Biffle got together in turn two. Raines and the
rest of the leaders pitted under caution. The Bayer Consumer Care Racing
team put on four new tires and refueled the car in an amazing
14.9-seconds. This put Tony Raines 7 positions closer to the front and
in the 4th place for the restart.
Just past the halfway mark,
Todd Bodine was leading and Tony had fallen back to the 8th place. While
under green, the leaders started pitting. Tony stayed out on the track
and took over the lead. He led 7 laps and was then called into the pits
for his final pit stop. He returned to the race to be 10th.
The 6th caution came on lap
153 when Marty Houston spun in turn four. The leaders pitted, and Raines
stayed out on the track to take the lead once more. Tony held the first
position for a few laps before being passed by Greg Biffle, Todd Bodine,
and Jason Keller.
While Tony was holding his
4th place position, Larry Foyt scrubbed the wall coming off of turn four
on the tri-oval bringing out the final caution of the day with only
minimal laps remaining.
NASCAR opted to red flag the
race for the clean up of debris, and so the race would not finish under
the yellow. This left the leaders bunched up and would make for an 8-lap
shootout.
The green flag waved for the
last time and race leader, Todd Bodine, was able to break away from the
other 12 cars that were on the lead lap. Tony was having no problem
holding his 4th place spot, but was not able to get ahead of the 2nd and
3rd place cars.
Tony Raines and the Bayer
Consumer Care Racing crew had their best finish so far this season,
finishing 4th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
"This was a good day
all the way around," Raines commented after the race. "We had
awesome pit stops, actually three awesome pit stops. We went a whole
race without hitting anyone and no one hitting us," Raines
continued. "I am so happy for the guys. They have worked so hard
and it seems like it is starting to pay off."
Todd Bodine won the race,
while Greg Biffle came in 2nd, Jason Keller was 3rd, Tony Raines was
4th, and Jeff Green rounded out the top 5.
Tony Raines is now 23rd in
the NASCAR Busch Series point standings.
